Well-known and popular pieces by Bach were played in two halls at the Palace of Arts for 12 hours, as interpreted by the best Hungarian and international performing artists. Famous musicians included, among others, Sigiswald, Wieland and Barthold Kuijken, the Aura Musicale and Miklós Perényi. The concerts could be enjoyed not only at the venue: those who were unable to buy a ticket were still able to listen to a special live broadcast of the concerts, filmed on several cameras with excellent sound quality, on the website of the Budapest Festival Orchestra and the Palace of Arts. The programme was also broadcast live on Bartók Radio from midday. Music marathons have been organised by the BFO and the Palace of Arts for seven years now. At the first marathon in 2008, audiences enjoyed pieces by Tchaikovsky, and the whole-day music event was a roaring success even then. In the following years, the organisers put together the concert series from works by Dvořak, Beethoven, Schubert, Mozart and Bartók. This year Iván Fischer chose one of the greatest geniuses of music history, Johann Sebastian Bach, to be the main feature of the 2014 Marathon. “Musicians celebrate Bach’s art all their life, and it is this very admiration that we share with the audience on one single day” – said the artistic director of the Marathon.
