Iván Fischer won the Association of Music Critics of Argentina’s award for Best Foreign Conductor, while the Budapest Festival Orchestra won the award for Best Foreign Symphony Orchestra. The Association gave awards in several categories to the most prominent artists of last season. In June 2015, the BFO gave two successful concerts in the Teatro Colón, Buenos Aires. At the time, the Buenos Aires Herald’s review emphasised how “Iván Fischer is a man of innovation; something much in evidence during the concerts in Argentina.” They went on to highlight how the coherence and mindset of the musicians is much more typical of a chamber orchestra than a symphonic one. As they put it, the musicians "evidently love their conductor, who has had such a long and fruitful partnership with them ... After the interval, one of the very best interpretations I have heard of Brahms’ Fourth Symphony showed that Fischer is a redoubtable conductor.” According to La Nacion, the Brahms symphony showed “different shades of perfection”; the orchestra were “amazing”, their playing “ethereal, transparent and elegant”. The Argentinian El País also wrote of an “outstanding concert”, an extravaganza of colours and rhythms and Iván Fischer’s “excellent interpretations”. But it wasn't just in Argentina that the BFO received recognition; their February concert in Carnegie Hall headed up to the New York Observer‘s impressive list of the Top 6 Moments of the 2015-16 NY Classical Music Season. They wrote how “no [other] ensemble possessed a more unique quality of sound and temperament this season.” Besides all this, the Festival Orchestra recently made it to two of Gramophone’s lists; the recording of Mahler’s Fourth was included among the Top 10 Mahler Symphony Recordings, while Beethoven’s Fourth and Sixth go onto their 50 greatest Beethoven recordings. In August the Festival Orchestra is returning to the BBC Proms, performing three concerts as the resident orchestra in San Sebastian and will also be making their way to summer festivals in Santander and Copenhagen.
