The exciting all-Russian programme featured Liadov's symphonic poem The Enchanted Lake, Op.62, Cello Concerto No.1. by Dmitry Shostakovich and Sergei Rachmaninov's Symphony No.3. in A Minor, Op.44. The soloist of the Shostakovich piece was Norvegian cellist Truls Mork. David Zinman: The excellent conductor was born in New York in 1936. He was Pierre Monteux’s assistant in Boston, who took him along to Europe, where first he became the music director of the Dutch Chamber Orchestra then of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Between 1985 and 1998 he was music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra; between 1985 and 2009 artistic director of the famous Aspen Festival; since 1995 he has been music director of the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zurich: his contract has been recently extended until 2014. More than hundred of his recordings were awarded of dozens of prizes, with five Grammy and one Gramophone Award among them. As a guest conductor he works with the greatest orchestras of the world from New York and Berlin to Vienna. Mr. Zinman has conducted the Budapest Festival Orchestra for the second time. Truls Mork: Deep musicality and superb technique have placed this Norwegian cellist at the forefront of the musical world, both as a soloist and chamber musician. His career started with first place in the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition. He has worked with outstanding conductors such as Haitink, Sawallisch, Salonen, Neeme Järvi, Rattle, Jansons and Iván Fischer. He has premiered several contemporary works, such as Penderecki's Cello Concerto with Charles Dutoit. Two years ago the Amsterdam Concertgebouw organised a mini-festival of four concerts with him and his guests. He is founder and artistic director of the Stavanger Chamber Music Festival. As a chamber musician he regularly partners Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Gil Shaham and Yefim Bronfman. He is an exclusive artist of Virgin Classics, winning numerous awards for his recordings.
