“Silence is the music that is most defining to everyone’s life now”

Quarantine Minutes with Barna Juhász

We launched our series, entitled “Quarantine Minutes,” so as not to lose touch with one another even during these difficult times. We spoke with our musicians to hear how they are dealing with their new circumstances in light of the coronavirus epidemic. How have their lives changed? Are they able to find anything positive in their situation? What music do they recommend for you? How have they transformed their ways of making music? We hope you enjoy hearing from viola player Barna Juhász.

What music would you recommend for our audiences while they are isolated at home? What do you listen to and what do you like to play to improve your mood?

Silence is the music that is most defining to everyone’s life right now. Everyone should listen to it – it is not easy to get used to! When I can no longer take it, I join an online broadcast; I very much enjoy Ádám Móser’s balcony concerts, for instance, every afternoon at 5 o’clock.

What do you do in the time you otherwise would have spent with the orchestra? With whom do you make music at home, and how?

I play around with my own instrument every day – this is a part of normal life affirmation.

Have you learned anything new during the quarantine? Have you perhaps picked up any new habits?

This is what I am afraid of the most: what habits will I pick up in these strange times? I try not to allow myself any!

What do you miss the most right now?

I realized in recent months how great it is to go to the theater regularly! Not like in the old days, when you would arrange tickets months in advance, but to show up at, say, Örkény Theater at 7 p.m., hoping they will have tickets...so I miss that.

What do you like about the quarantine?

I have not found any benefit to it so far. Maybe in retrospect I will appreciate more the things I can’t see right now.

Tune in to our Quarantine soirées! Visit our website and Facebook page every evening from 7:45 p.m. If you would like to support our series, we would appreciate it very much.
