LET’S GET TOGETHER TO FILL HEROES’ SQUARE!

LET’S GET TOGETHER TO FILL HEROES’ SQUARE!

In a little more than a week, the Budapest Festival Orchestra (BFO) will be bringing music and dance to Heroes’ Square. 500 children, from disadvantaged communities all over Hungary, have been preparing for this day for months, and on Friday, 3 June at 6 pm they will be getting together to dance to the music.
Regardless of where they’re from, their family background, religion or colour, everyone is equal at the Dancing on the Square project. “This initiative is about tolerance, it is about both disadvantaged and better-off children coming together and dancing to the Festival Orchestra’s music. It is a great celebration of tolerance” – says conductor Iván Fischer.

Besides Stravinsky’s humorous and grotesque ballet music, Jeu de cartes (Game of Cards), the orchestra is also preparing some surprise pieces for the concert. The audience will be seated on the now-customary paper chairs to welcome in the summer at the free concert.

Although the BFO has given innumerable memorable concerts at Heroes’ Square, it was only after an extended hiatus that they returned last year. During the Yugoslav Wars, Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian choirs sang Beethoven’s Choral Symphony in concert. In 2001, the BFO performed a concert entitled ‘With Gypsies’, alongside Roma musicians; while thousands danced in the square during the 2007 ‘Waltz concert’.

Let’s come together to celebrate the talent and courage of the children, and the power of joint creation! See you in Heroes’ Square at 6 pm on 3 June, for a show of tolerance and acceptance!
