Iván Fischer’s Easter Triumph in France

Even with the headline, the Parisian newspaper Le Figaro was already waxing lyrical about the unrivalled success that the Budapest Festival Orchestra, and its conductor, Iván Fischer, met in France. (Népszava/Tibor Várkonyi)
The Master conducted Mahler’s Third Symphony and, according to the praises of the French daily’s reviewer, he did so with a “captivating interpretation” that set the tone for the week’s extraordinary programme. The complimentary review talked of how the Hungarian ensemble and its director once again proved their “total dedication to the art of music.

This time it had more than mere political value following the free concert the BFO played for refugees in Berlin at the beginning of March.

With his wide conducting gestures and great experience, Iván Fischer conveyed the rich content of the Mahler symphony in its entirety, from the first note to the last.” The review then added that the Master had chosen risky tempos to allow him to portray even the slightest nuances with perfect faith. The orchestra was inspired to a level that is seldom heard in the Aix-en-Provence concert hall.

The review went on, giving further details about the week-long event and mentioning that Iván Fischer had set a great example for other orchestras and their directors, including French artists, to live up to over the coming days.
