LET THE MOUNTAIN COME TO MOHAMMAD

The Budapest Festival Orchestra, one of the ten best orchestras in the world, offers to work with educational institutions as part of the Orchestra’s partner school programme. This year our school, the János Bólyai Elementary School, grabbed this opportunity (uj.kispest.hu)
The programme enables children to meet music and musicians of the highest standard in person, organised by Hungary’s globally renowned symphony orchestra and with the involvement of its extraordinary instrumental artists. Nine musicians visited us on 21 November. During the performance entitled “A Taste of Musical Instruments” children familiarised themselves with the structure of the symphony orchestra and the instrument groups, while musicians played and introduced their instruments one by one. All this was done with spontaneous simplicity, friendliness and humour, speaking the children’s language. A little girl from the first year had the opportunity to hold Iván Fischer’s baton in her hands during the performance, but the real surprise came at the very end, when the children were allowed to hold and play the much-appreciated instruments. At the end, even those who had not yet considered what musical instrument they would like to play were excitedly discussing the options. Another opportunity awaits us in December when we will be able to visit one of the Orchestra’s practice sessions, which, again, will be something our children have never experienced before.   Enikő Dévényi teacher, János Bólyai Elementary School, Kispest
