Ivan Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra wear this anniversary year programme of Wagner highlights with insouciant elegance. The quality is staggering, from the tender pianissimo in the Siegfried Idyll to the bruising darkness of Siegfried’s Funeral March. The articulation is sometimes idiosyncratic, and Petra Lang sounds a little stretched at times. Nonetheless, there is masochistic pleasure aplenty in imagining the effect of hearing this team in a complete work.
