Quarantine Minutes with Noémi Molnár

We launched our series, entitled “Quarantine Minutes,” so as not to lose touch with one another even during these difficult times. We spoke with our musicians to hear how they are dealing with their new circumstances in light of the coronavirus epidemic. How have their lives changed? Are they able to find anything positive in their situation? What music do they recommend for you? How have they transformed their ways of making music? We hope you enjoy hearing from violinist Noémi Molnár.

I very much miss making music together, the orchestra, my friends and my colleagues! For me, nothing can make up for the time I spend with the orchestra, and the experience of making music together. The way a piece of music gradually takes shape and comes into being through the rehearsals, and then the experience of the concerts and the atmosphere of the tours – I don’t think anything can make up for that.

So right now I am trying to focus on other things to make use of my time. I cook and bake things much more often than I used to; I try out new recipes. I exercise, I read, I draw, I bicycle either with my 17-year-old son or by myself, and I try to find my own inner peace outdoors in nature, as spring kicks in. Sometimes I put on my tango shoes, waiting for me in a corner, to learn a bit of dance technique while listening to tango music.

In terms of music, I focus on the chamber music tasks ahead of me. I very much enjoy practicing the Haydn and Glinka trio performed at the Quarantine Soirées, as well as a Tchaikovsky string quartet, which maybe we will get around to at some point in the future...

I find that playing the violin helps overcome any problems of the soul; all my life, it has always been the violin that has restored my inner balance. The same way, it can be very helpful to listen to music, watch a good movie, read poetry or reread your favorite novel, with a glass of wine, or to have a good conversation (right now primarily over the telephone, sadly).

I hope everyone is able to find their favorite pastime even in these times!

Tune in to our Quarantine soirées! Visit our website and Facebook page every evening from 7:45 p.m. If you would like to support our series, we would appreciate it very much.
