A US critic recently realised what we have known for ages: there is no orchestra on this earth that is better than the Budapest Festival Orchestra at the hands of conductor and founder Iván Fischer. The Berliner Philharmoniker is perhaps more powerful, the Cleveland Orchestra more perfect, the Concertgebouw Orchestra more presumptuous, the Vienna Philharmonic, well… more Viennese – but nothing matches the honesty and chamber-like interaction of the Hungarians. I realised this two weeks ago at the Concertgebouw in Bruges, where Fischer and his colleagues gave the most grandiose orchestral concert with Mahler's Fifth that I have ever heard – and you can find out for yourselves by listing to the recording of Mahler's First Symphony. It is amazing how these musicians knead Mahler's collage into an organic whole. And how affection can flow from speakers too. (R.T.)   Onlangs is eindelijk ook een Amerikaanse recensent opgevallen wat wij al lang wisten: er is op deze planeet geen beter orkest dan Budapest Festival Orchestra [BFO] onder zijn chef en stichter Ivan Fischer. Misschien zijn de Berliner Philharmoniker krachtiger, is Cleveland volmaakter. het Concertgebouworkest zelfvoldaner en de Wìener Philharmoniker‚ euh‚ Weenser, maar niks kan tegen de virtuoze gulheid en het kamermuziekachtige samenspel van de Hongaren op. Dat mocht ik twee weken geleden in het Brugse Concertgebouw vaststellen - waar Fischer en co met Mahlers Vijfde het meest grandioze orkestconcert gaf dat ik me herinner - en dat kunt u samen met mij vaststellen bij het horen van deze plaat, gewijd aan Mahlers Eerste. Indrukwekkend hoe deze musici Mahlers collages tot haast organische samenhang kneden. Of hoe liefde ook uit boxen kan komen. (R.T.)
