GUSTAV MAHLER: SYMPHONY NO. 5

GUSTAV MAHLER: SYMPHONY NO. 5

Budapest Festival Orchestra/Iván Fischer/Channel Classics SACD (komolyportal.com)
As soon as it came out, I ordered one. It is a very special recording, I have never heard such a dark and sombre Symphony No. 5. The tempos are remarkably slow sometimes, yet they never become dull. Of course, the usual BFO virtues are also present: transparency as well as the warm and highly dynamic sound. The fourth movement manages to strike a balance between sentimentalism and romanticism, and leads to the more cheerful and relaxed last movement. It is not the only possible interpretation, but a truly unique and valuable recording driven by the demand for a specific interpretation.
