The vast majority of the concerts at this music festival, organised for the 120th time this year, will be held at the Royal Albert Hall in London between 18 July and 13 September. One of the world’s greatest classical music series, it will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I. On 4 August, when Great Britain declared war on Germany, a special concert, entitled War Horse Proms, will be held. Michael Morpurgo’s novel entitled War Horse written on World War I for children in 1982 will be adapted to a special puppet show with a musical accompaniment. (The novel was made into a film by Steven Spielberg entitled War Horse in 2011.) John Tavener’s Requiem Fragments will premiere on the same day, performed by the choir of the Tallis Scholars. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, members of the pop music duo Pet Shop Boys, paid tribute to Alan Turing, the renowned British mathematician and computer scientist, when they wrote their new piece entitled A Man from The Future, which will also be performed as part of the Proms. The 150th anniversary of Richard Strauss’ birth will be commemorated by staging three of his operas. Sopranos Nina Stemme from Sweden and Christine Goerke from the United States will sing the leading roles in Salome and Elektra respectively, while the tunes of the Knight of the Rose will also be played. Alongside British orchestras, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Budapest Festival Orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic, the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and the Cleveland Orchestra have been invited too. This will be the first time ensembles from Greece, Iceland, Lapland, China, South Korea, Singapore, Qatar and Turkey will perform at this festival.
