Bartók, Bartók, Bartók

The Bartók Marathon held in the Palace of Arts on 3 February was a resounding success.
The whole-day programme dreamt up by Iván Fischer was attended by more than 10,000 people, who wanted to spend the entire day or even just a few hours in the company of Béla Bartók. And as Bartók Radio provided a live broadcast from all 11 of the concerts comprising selected works from the great composer, the marathon – as is now tradition – was available to those who could only follow the atmosphere of the whole event from their own home. The sixth such marathon, it displayed a wide array of Hungarian musical talent: from the Zoltán Kocsis National Philharmonic to the Muzsikás ensemble, and of course the traditional production from Iván Fischer and the Festival Orchestra to close the marathon, which this time round crowned the master that is Béla Bartók and the celebratory programme that clearly revealed his popularity with a performance of Duke Bluebeard's Castle.
