What would it be like if the heroes of Mozart’s opera were brought to life not by singers, but by exquisitely crafted marionettes? This Salzburg Marionette Theatre production is an approximately one-hour version of an iconic work from the operatic repertoire. While preserving the opera’s most important musical and dramatic elements, it presents the adventures of Tamino, Pamina and Papageno in a more compact and accessible form. In this performance by a company that has been operating for over a century, puppetry becomes an art form in its own right. The meticulously carved figures, richly detailed sets and selected highlights of Mozart’s music converge to create a unique theatrical experience. It is an ideal first encounter with opera, yet equally special for those already familiar with the work.

The recording used in the performance was made by Deutsche Grammophon in 1955.

Sung in German with Hungarian surtitles.

Recommended for those aged 8 and over.
