Tibor Gátay

A pupil of the Zoltán Kodály Musical Primary and Secondary School of Kecskemét, Tibor Gátay began to learn to play the violin at the age of nine. At the age of 18 he was admitted to the Teachers' Training College of the Franz Liszt Music Academy of Budapest, where his professors were Ilona G.Halász and Béla Bánfalvi. Having obtained his diploma, he spent two years in South America playing in the National Youth Orchestra of Mexico, then returned to Hungary to continue his musical studies at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music with István Ruha. Still a student of the Academy, he began playing in the Budapest Festival Orchestra in 1984 and has been its member since 1992, when the BFO became a permanent orchestra. Tibor Gátay is also a committed chamber musician who performs regularly in different chamber music series of the BFO.
