Brahms’ Hungarian Dance, in London, with singing musicians – in a way only the BFO knows how. Instant goosebumps.
In 2018, at a concert of the London Proms, Iván Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra decided to show how folk songs and folk-like art songs were a part of Hungarian music, in the romantic medium of national identity, from colorful, raw originals to their revamped, virtuoso concert hall versions by Liszt, Brahms and Sarasate. Then, when the audience had already been treated to Jenő Lisztes’s cimbalom solo, and violin performances by two exceptional Roma ensemble leaders, the BFO launched into their encore.
