BAROQUE CHARM
10-11 January, 2020, Liszt Academy
Vivaldi and richly cascading arias from the banks of the Seine: British master of Baroque music and a return conductor of the Budapest Festival Orchestra Jonathan Cohen will use Vivaldi’s clever, story-like pieces to show how international diplomacy worked in the 18th century. Emőke Baráth is back after L’Orfeo, joined by Anna Reinhold (alto) and Brindely Sherratt (bass).

THE MUSIC OF THE FUTURE IS HERE

Presenting today’s fresh new music lies close to the BFO’s heart. We are not afraid of the contemporary; in fact, we like playing it and sharing it with you. Zoltán Kovács has specifically composed his piece “-3” for our musicians, which will make its world debut on 12 January. The music of the future is here with us in the BFO’s living room with melodies from Lutosławski, Kurtág, Gubaidulina, Boldizsár Csíky, Penderecki and Schoenfield.

BEETHOVEN, SCHUMANN AND THE POWER OF CREATIVE ENERGY
19-20 January, 2020, Müpa Budapest
An old friend and one of the most seasoned conductors of the German musical repertoire Marek Janowski will be returning, this time with some masterpieces from Beethoven and Schumann. Beethoven’s one and only violin concerto, which invigorates both the body and the soul, will be performed by Benjamin Beilman on his Stradivari made in 1709, and their duo is a guarantee of excellence. Schumann was in a decidedly poor mental state when composing his Symphony No. 2, which yet stands as a testament to the triumph of creative energy.

A MAHLER EVENING WITH THE MOST AUTHENTIC MAHLER CONDUCTOR
15, 16 and 17 February, 2020, Müpa Budapest
To quote a previous review by József Kling, “While the musical scene is full of specialists, one specializing in the scalpel, another one in the saw, Iván Fischer conducts Mahler with the natural ease of someone spreading butter on a slice of fine rye bread”. This concert is a pure synthesis of Mahler’s music: pain, mourning, hope and acceptance in brilliant major keys. Kindertotenlieder will be performed solo by Gerhild Romberger, followed by Symphony No. 5, which is an absolute must whether you listen to a recording or a live performance by the BFO.
