POSITION: Head of Finance

The Budapest Festival Orchestra is rated among the top ten orchestras in the world, with frequent appearances in major concert halls worldwide from New York to London, from Berlin to Vienna. Each year, its symphonic orchestra, youth, Baroque, contemporary and community concerts are enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people. The majority of the orchestra’s funding comes from the Hungarian state and the Municipality of Budapest in addition to revenues from foreign tours, local concert tickets and sponsorships. We are looking for an expert to take care of the orchestra’s financial management tasks.

Our new Head of Finance will be a member of a team where people support each other in everything, go to the orchestra’s concerts together, and take pride in being part of a world-class orchestra.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Budapest Festival Orchestra is looking for a Head of Finance who can leverage their expertise and experience to help retain the financial stability of the organization. As a direct report of the Managing Director, they are responsible for optimizing cash flow, following policies and meeting deadlines.

They will support the management of the orchestra in financial decision making and execution. The purpose of the position is to improve the financially robustness of the organization and ensure maximum profitability. Their core responsibility is to maintain and improve the organization’s financial stability.

KEY FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

  • Preparing economic and financial analyses, developing economic and financial strategy, and preparing, executing, monitoring and regularly improving implementation
  • Preparing, submitting for approval and executing the annual financial plan
  • Planning, reviewing and executing daily operations; cash flow planning and management; maintaining records of accounts; closing the year; banking; cash management; making transfers and payments
  • Data disclosures: filing statistics, reports and accounts with the National Tax and Customs Administration, Hungarian Statistical Office, Hungarian State Treasury, Electronic Application Management and Cooperation System, National Cultural Fund of Hungary and Ministry of Human Resources
  • Administration (management of contracts and registrations, preparation of public benefit reports, document management)
  • Financial planning, execution and settlement of tenders
  • Drafting the financial parts of legal documents
  • Meeting and causing others to meet deadlines
  • Full general ledger accounting, responsibility for daily accounting tasks
  • Coordinating the work of the accounting staff
  • Preparing task returns, managing tax payments
  • Annual, quarterly and monthly closings, statistical data disclosures
  • Liaising with and disclosures to authorities, auditors and other external partners
  • Preparation of public benefit report
  • Arranging for audits, active liaising with auditors
  • Liaising with donors, preparation and submission of statements
  • Creation and preparation of statements and reports to the management and the board of trustees
  • Management of cash and banking activities, organization of cash flow, liaising with banks
  • Improvement of accounting processes
  • Payroll accounting, performing tasks related to labor and social security obligations
  • Keeping track of debts owed to the organization, ensuring supplier invoices are paid
  • Preparation of the financial settlement of accounts for ministry and government grants and tenders
  • Preparation of investment and funding decisions
  • Tracking, complying with and monitoring compliance with labor law requirements
  • Booking exchange rate differences
  • Preparation of public benefit data statements
  • Daily consultation with various departments

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Clean criminal record
  • Relevant university/college degree
  • At least 2 to 3 years of financial leadership experience
  • Registered chartered accountant for non-profit (or for-profit) organizations certificate
  • Advanced MS Office skills with strong Excel skills
  • Commitment to the orchestra’s key objectives and values, such as innovation, value creation, openness, tolerance and social sensitivity
  • Ability to work independently; eye for detail
  • Good problem-solving skills
  • Active English language skills (at least B2 level)

PREFERRED:

  • Working knowledge of the Nagy Machinátor business management system
